The course
consists of an explanation of the program on Basic Adolescent Sexual
Education (B.A.S.E.) for Educators, patented by the IVAF. The course offers
basic and necessary information for use in teaching adolescents. The course
aims for the perfect assimilation of the content of the program, especially
its technical aspects. It guarantees educational centers that the graduates
of this course are ideal teachers of sex education.
Suggested
Methodology for the sex education course (Basic Adolescent Sexuality
Education Program) at school thought by a graduate from the IVAF course:
The program is
designed as a one-year course, meeting three times a week. In the first
meeting, students and teachers take up the theoretical part of the lesson.
In the second meeting during the week the class is divided into small groups
to prepare for the discussion of the issues raised in the discussion topics
at the end of the book. The third meeting is for the actual discussion and
explanation of the issues.
The course can
be organized according to the criteria suggested by the management team of
the educational institution. However, two things have to be taken into
account:
1. The teacher
necessarily has to be prepared and updated to teach it. This is achieved by
doing the entire B.A.S.E. FOR EDUCATORS course, independently of his/her
previous knowledge and experience on the subject. The program presents a
new form of sex education with new content, and with a continuous reference
to the methods of fertility awareness, which in recent times have
incorporated new ideas
2. The
program should be given in its entirety. The theoretical and discussion
topics of the lessons are interdependent and complement each other. Failure
to give or refer to certain topics, due to lack of time or opportunity, is
depriving the students of the formation which the program intends to give.
The teacher
has to be updated on the content of the 21 theoretical topics and the 84
practical issues. He/ she must be able to explain each of the theoretical
topics with expertise, knowing and adapting to the students. This requires
the teacher to be up to date in these matters, and for that, the educational
institution has to consider making an investment. The teacher also has to
have an attitude of study and continuing education which is indispensable
for the effectiveness of the program. He/she also has to be prepared to
answer the questions which may arise and know how to proceed to the next
topic. He/she should also know how to keep his/her audience interest,
making use of the didactic resources available to motivate the students.
To facilitate
teaching, a list of objectives is set followed by the explanations, as well
as the take-home message which the topic transmits. The teacher has to have
in mind both the topics and the message when he/she prepares the class and
during its delivery.
There are ten
True or False questions at the end of each topic, which the students have to
answer with certainty. Mastery of the previous topics helps in assimilating
the content of the succeeding lessons.
The formation
which this program tries to impart is urgent. Hence, the IVAF highly
recommends that the teaching institution implement it in the same year the
professors do the entire B.A.S.E. FOR EDUCATORS course.
